Introducing Nulo, Pet Nutrition Inspired by World-Class Athletes

I’d like to introduce you to our newest, and in my and Michael Phelp’s opinion, highest-performing pet food we carry. It is Nulo, with the slogan “Fuel Their Inner Athlete”, and it has a number of traits that distinguish it from other pet foods.

We Begin with its Macro-Nutrient Composition

Nulo is free from grains and high-glycemic carbohydrates. Grains are often linked to food allergies while ingredients like potatoes and tapioca are associated with elevated blood sugar levels in pets. As a result, Nulo also guarantees a minimum of 30% crude protein, supporting immune health and lean muscle mass. Not all protein is equal, and the first 2-4 ingredients of Nulo are animal-sourced proteins, like turkey, cod, and salmon meal. This means that carbs are guaranteed equal to or lower than 35% of Nulo’s mass.

And we arrive at Nulo’s hallmark, a patented probiotic

GanedenBC is a patented, spore based probiotic that survives the heat of processing so that it may be applied before cooking, and therefore avoid failures due to drying, storage, and shelf-life. It supports digestive health and improves nutrient absorption.

And end at Nulo’s sourcing

Nulo is independently-owned, and dedicated to the highest standards of authenticity, integrity, and food-safety. It’s based in Austin, TX, so Nulo supports the Texas economy. If you have any questions about Nulo, you can forward them to [email protected].

Breaking News: The Summer is Pretty Hot

If you’re reading this, you probably live in Texas

And I don’t have to tell you what you can feel by stepping outside. But if you’re unconvinced, a new report from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Programme shows that last month was globally the hottest month in history. In Texas, last month 26 out of 31 days averaged over 90 degrees Fahrenheit, many on the upper end.

If it’s hot for you, it’s hot for your pets

Glamour Paws offers Shed-Out treatments for your pets. If your pets are long-haired, it is simply not manageable for them to endure the Summer heat with their coats unabated. According to vcahospitals.com, if your pet’s body temperature exceeds 103 degrees Fahrenheit, that is considered abnormal or hyperthermic. Plus, pet hair is messy and an irritant, even in people not allergic. When you stop by Glamour Paws for your regular spa appointment, make sure to include a Shed-Out treatment this Summer, for your pets’ sakes and yours.

What Happened when I Gave Bob CBD

Today I’m going to tell you a very special story of how my dog’s behavior transformed in a single day. Let us first establish what a handsome boy Bob is, and why we kept him around for multiple years before his behavioral change. He’s the black Rhodesian Ridgeback / Great Dane mix, and he’s truly quite easy on the eyes:

So you can see why we would have kept him around, even though he was a nightmare to deal with.

Bob’s Behavior

Bob was an anxious, jealous dog. He did NOT like when you would pet any of the other dogs in the house, and would make it clear by forcing himself between you and whomever you were petting. His constant need for physical touch meant that if you petted him, then he would harass you if you stopped. He was not responsive to a trainer we hired, and his large stature combined with his over-excitability meant that he was accidentally hurting people regularly, especially my mom.

The latter point is probably what would have ended his stay at our home, had things not changed irrevocably for the better.

Why We Tried CBD

When I came back to write more blogs for Glamour Paws, I saw that Charlene had many CBD treatments in her shop. Personally, I have friends and family that use CBD to treat anxiety, but I had never heard of its use in pets before! I did a bit of research. According to The Canadian Veterinary Journal, dogs in fact have a higher proportion of cannabinoid receptors than humans do! We know that these receptors are responsible for the anxiolytic effects of CBD in humans, so it stands to reason that it has these affects in dogs too.

How Bob Changed

Well, I guess you could say that Bob started acting like a normal dog. But the relief this brought our family was immeasurable. I can’t speak to Bob and get his opinion, but I can only believe that it had to have brought him immeasurable relief as well! The transformation was apparent in literally 20 minutes. He didn’t jump anymore, previously an integral feature of his behavior, and while he still enjoyed being petted, he didn’t become panicky when we stopped! I’ve never been more impressed with a pet product, honestly.

If you’re interested, I’m attaching a chart below that is also posted inside the Glamour Paws store, that provides information on specific versions of the drug and what they treat best. We used “Chill Out.”

Meet the Groomers Series: Sandy

Today I took a stroll through the shop and sat down for a chat with Sandy, whom in the photo on the left is shaving a Yorkie mix named Maggie. Sandy has worked at Glamour Paws for almost five years now, and she’s been a part of the family for longer than that. Her sister Daisy has been a part of Glamour Paws for 13 years now, and Sandy would drop by the shop to fill in bathing vacancies, which eventually turned into full-time employment as a bather. Sandy is a rising star at the shop, quickly becoming the bath manager and also helping with Charlene’s mobile grooming service, C. R. Paws. About two years ago she became a groomer.

Asked about her favorite cuts, she enjoys doing what is called the ‘Lamb Cut’, which is essentially short hair on the dog’s body and long hair on the dog’s legs. Guests request this cut on breeds ranging from Doodles, to Yorkies, to Schnauzers. In general, Sandy also loves working with Golden Retrievers.

Speaking of Yorkies, this was my favorite thing I learned from the conversation: A while ago a customer did not want their Yorkipoo, Sophia, that they had brought into the shop, and Sandy adopted her on the spot. I have met Sophia, and I will say she is hard not to immediately love, but I think Sandy is extra special for displaying this amount of care!

New posts twice a week! Meet the editor

I’m back!

I took a break from Glamour Paws to continue my studies at TCU, but now I’m making time again to make more posts! We had a good response to the last set of posts I made, and I wanted to tell you all a little bit about myself:

Me at Glamour Paws holding a dog I fell in love with

My name is Peter and I’m 23 years old. I’m a senior at TCU and I’m majoring in Math. My favorite hobby is playing guitar and I read a lot. Here’s my dog situation: I have 4 dogs. Their names are Bob, Molly, Micky, and Blue, and their breeds are respectively Rhodesian Ridgeback/Great Dane mix, Chihuahua, Chihuahua, and Golden Retriever. I met Charlene through her son, who is a childhood friend of mine, and I’ve watched Glamour Paws grow and develop over the past few years under her leadership.

I’m excited to continue this blog and I hope to put out content that my readers love. I would love to hear from each of you about what kind of content you’d love to see! Comment below.

Valentine’s Day the day of Romance and Love?

February 14th Valentine’s Day. This is the day for romance and love yet each year on this day, there is a rise in cases at Poison control. Many of these calls involve your furry pets and chocolate, lillies, and other poisonous plants. Valentine’s Day can be just as much fun for your pets as humans as long as we keep the dangerous items out of paws’ reach! It’s not always about the box of chocolates and flower bouquets, your pets are your biggest fans and don’t need materialistic things to know you love them. Even though love is in the air always remember a pet is a huge commitment. So giving a cuddly puppy or kitten may seem fitting, returning a pet you hadn’t planned on is anything but romantic. So those of you with pets here are a few things you could do to celebrate with your furry friends to show them they are loved on this special day.

Obviously chocolate is a bad idea but they make pupcakes! Pupcakes are delicious cakes and cookies that you can make at home. We actually sell them here at Glamour Paws, or you could swing in and grab a bone or get it online

Another option would be to do something they love to do. Does your pet love taking long walks, going for a run, playing fetch in the backyard, or going to see his/her friends at the dog park? Well go! Let them enjoy the day and they will love you for a lifetime! Play dates and finding a new toy are always good options as well. My pets always love to come get a bath and get pampered so bring them to have a day of pampering! Wether Valentine’s Day is your favorite holiday or not make it a good one by spending the day with the one who loves you unconditionally!

Sweet Summer is Approaching!

And that means preparing for vacations! But vacations can be tough to arrange when you have pets in the family. When I go on a vacation, I have to make sure my plans carry accommodations for my dachshund, Charlie, and my chihuahua, Molly. After taking them on several vacations, I have a bit of experience making it work.

Finding pet-friendly hotels can be draining (calling the hotel to see if it is pet-friendly, finding out it isn’t, moving on to the next, etc.), but here’s a tip: It may not be one of the main specifications, but most travel agencies will give you the option to select a pet-friendly hotel. For finding a good boarding kennel for when I want to go somewhere without Charlie and Molly, I typically look at reviews on Yelp to find which places will treat them right (like Glamour Paws does!).

Make sure your pet carrier is airline-approved! I had a nightmare my first time traveling with Molly. I couldn’t just leave her at the airport, or hope to find someone to pet sit before the flight left! I had to reschedule my flight. If you want to be sure your carrier is pet approved, I’d recommend the Sleepypod Air. Dog Fancy and Cat Fancy magazines individually chose Sleepypod Air as a best product one year. Where those magazines meet, you’d wager they’re onto something. Ernie Slone of Dog Fancy wrote, “The breathable mesh makes it comfortable for pets, but also easy to conform to differing airline under-seat storage requirements. The carrier is easy to secure to rolling luggage, and hidden straps also make it a snap to fasten to car seatbelts, adding a measure of safety.”

You can grab one or more at our shop here

How To: Happy & Healthy Pup!

We all know that there are some foods that are not good for us, and for the most part we tend to avoid them to ensure we stay healthy. Just like us, there are some things put into dog food that we need to watch out for, and certain dog foods we need to avoid to make sure our puppies stay healthy! Below are some ingredients put into dog food to avoid:

  • Preservatives: Some of the most common preservatives put into dog food include Ethoxyquin and BHT/BHA. These preservatives in particular are linked to the development of cancer, kidney and liver damage, immune deficiencies, and even blindness.
  • Corn and/or Corn Syrup: Corn syrup is often used to sweeten dog food, which is not only unnecessary but very unhealthy for your babies leading to weight gain and diabetes. Additionally, the “corn” put into dog food is not the corn we traditionally eat, rather feed corn  that was not approved for humans to eat and/ or what was leftover from human consumption. Not only is it fattening, but it can mold and even lead to death.
  • Animal Byproduct: Byproducts are the leftover parts of an animal that we do not want to eat. Byproduct has no nutritional value, due to the fact it does not have any “muscle meat”. These meats will sometimes even be contaminated.

Now that we have been educated on the importance of dog food, here are some healthy options to feed your pups!

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone! Although Halloween is a wonderful exciting holiday, it can be a scary and even dangerous day for your pups. Here is a few friendly reminders to help you, and your babies stay safe! It is important to keep all candy and treats out of reach of your pets, and keep a close eye on them to ensure they did not sneak into your stash! Of course, puppies deserve treats too, so get them something dog friendly (and healthy!) like the CocoTherapy Coconut Vanilla Flax Maggie Macaroons so they can safely celebrate the festivities with you. Secondly, remember that too many visitors can be stressful for your baby, especially when they are dressed in costumes and unidentifiable. If you notice your dog becoming overwhelmed, take proactive steps to calm them down by placing them in a secluded room, or give them some love and let them know it will all be okay! Finally, it is important to keep all tags and ID’s on dogs, and it is highly recommended to bring your dogs indoors! Once again, the abundance of people, costumes, and even some decorations can overwhelm and stress out your puppy, and the last thing we want is to spend Halloween searching for a lost pup who ran off out of fear!

So, we hope you and your puppies have a wonderful Halloween, and we cannot wait to see how cute they look in their costumes! Be sure to submit your pictures to our Facebook (Glamour Paws), or tag us on Instagram (glamour.paws). If you haven’t gotten a costume, no worries, because our costumes are 50% off on our website now so be sure to check it out!

Until next time!

UV Rays

While summer is a great time for playing in the sun, you also need to take precautions. While you use lotions, hats, and UV protecting clothing, your pups don’t have those luxuries in the backyard. While they might have shade and water, it doesn’t always give them the protection they need. That is why Glamour Paws is now carrying Sun Shield tees. They come in all sizes, a variety of colors, and not only protect 98% of UV rays, but are awesome for covering wounds and reducing allergens too. Protect your pups from the UV rays this summer.
